What Is Palo Santo

Palo Santo, known scientifically as Bursera graveolens, is a tree native to the seasonally dry tropical forests of South America, particularly in countries like Ecuador, Peru, and parts of Central America. The name “Palo Santo” translates from Spanish to “holy wood,” a testament to its revered status in various cultures.  It has been used for many centuries by shamans in ritual prayer, ceremonies and healing.
Like its close botanical cousins, Frankincense and Myrrh, it is rich in brain-oxygenating terpenes such as limonene and a-terpineol which give the Palo its uplifting and positive qualities.

Sustainable Harvesting and Production

Ethical harvesting of Palo Santo is crucial to preserve its spiritual essence and ensure environmental sustainability. Traditionally, only wood from naturally fallen trees or dead branches is collected, a practice that respects the natural life cycle of the tree. After a tree dies naturally, it rests on the forest floor for several years—typically between four to ten—allowing the wood to mature and develop its aromatic and healing properties. This period is essential for the resin to form, which imparts the characteristic scent associated with Palo Santo.
The production process begins with the careful collection of these aged, fallen trees. Harvesters gather the wood, ensuring that living trees are not harmed. The collected wood is then processed into various forms, such as incense sticks, essential oils, and other products. This method of harvesting not only maintains the ecological balance but also honors the traditional practices that have been passed down through generations.
By adhering to these sustainable practices, we ensure that the spirit of Palo Santo continues to thrive, allowing future generations to experience its sacred aroma and profound benefits.
